Nonza

Wednesday – Tortoises, Hairpin Roads, and a Flat Tire Link to heading

Time to pack our things and move on. Today’s journey takes us from Ocana to Nonza – but not without a stop along the way.

On the road, we visit A Cupulatta, a one-of-a-kind tortoise park nestled in lush greenery. “A Cupulatta” means simply “tortoise” in Corsican. The park is home to over 170 species from around the world – from tiny babies barely bigger than a coin to massive Galápagos giants that look like ancient dragons in slow motion.

We spend what feels like hours strolling from one enclosure to the next, watching the turtles munch peacefully, marveling at strange shell shapes, and learning about conservation and habitats along the way. A beautifully calming and enriching experience.

After a quick snack at the exit, we hit the road again – and as always in Corsica, that means winding our way up and down hills, curve after curve. The scenery is breathtaking, but our stomachs are getting a little fed up with the constant rocking.

View

After a while, we’re almost there – just about 20 minutes from Nonza! But then: an odd sound from the car. We pull over and see it immediately – a flat tire. Seriously? So close to the destination?!

Flat Tire

Luckily, the nearest garage is only a few minutes away. Once there, everything is inspected. We’re a bit nervous – the language barrier, the uncertainty of whether and how quickly this can be fixed… it’s tense. But after what feels like an eternity (and several deep sighs), something starts happening: the mechanic gets to work, tools clank, and suddenly it’s all sorted in no time. New tire, a quick nod, and we’re good to go. Phew!

We arrive at our Airbnb in Nonza pretty worn out. Time to kick back, put our feet up, and just be grateful that everything worked out in the end.

Thursday – Black Beach, Sunshine, and a Stylish Goodbye Link to heading

Sadly, today is already our last full day in Corsica. So we’re determined to soak up every moment.

Coffee

After a restful night, we stroll down to the little village of Nonza and settle into a shady spot at a café. Sitting in the sun, sipping strong coffee, munching fresh pastries – not a bad start to the day.

View

Recharged, we head up to the small watchtower overlooking the town. From there, the view is stunning: the endless sea, Nonza’s black pebble beach, and the picturesque village itself – like something from a postcard. We take it all in, breathing deeply, savoring the moment.

Before heading to the beach, we return to the café for a little refuel – a bite to eat, a drink, one last coffee. That’s Corsican dolce vita for you.

Beach

Then it’s time: we begin the descent to the black beach. A long staircase leads us down to the coast. What awaits is a unique piece of nature – a beach made up of dark, almost black stones that heat up quickly under the sun. Though it’s still spring, it’s getting toasty. The water, however, remains refreshingly cool… very cool.

Beach

Still, we dive in one last time – snorkeling among small fish, crabs, jellyfish, and even sea snakes. In between, we soak up the sun, scramble over rocks, and simply enjoy ourselves.

Eventually, it’s time to head back. At the Airbnb, most of our things are packed up and loaded into the car – the feeling of farewell starts to settle in.

But: before the end, we treat ourselves to one last excellent drink. Then we climb back up to the tower to watch one final sunset. The sun bathes the sea, the cliffs, and our memories in warm gold – a fitting end to a beautiful trip.

Friday – Homeward Bound with Sunrise and Sea Sway Link to heading

Time to say goodbye – and early, too. We have to be at the port in Bastia by 7 AM at the latest to catch the ferry back to the mainland. After a restless night, we rise in the dim morning light, pack up the last things, and set off.

One last time, we wind through the curves, up and down the hills – Corsica saying goodbye in its signature style. As we reach Bastia, the city greets us with a breathtaking sunrise over the sea. One final goosebump moment.

Ferry

Then we board the ferry. We find a cozy spot, lean back, and let it all sink in. Five hours at sea – perfect for waking up, having breakfast, and gradually saying goodbye to island life.

Back on the mainland, we face another seven hours of driving. Mile by mile, we make our way back to Switzerland – past mountains, valleys, and memories.

And then: hello home. Our adventure is over – but the stories, pictures, and feelings come with us. Corsica, you were wonderful.
